11. Chemical evolution in galaxies¶
So far, we have mainly focused on the dynamics of galactic systems, but galaxies are also the stage on which stars and planets form, evolve, and die. The formation and evolution of galaxies and the stars within them are intimately connected and in detail it is impossible to study the evolution of either one of them without considering the other. In this chapter, we start looking at the astrophysical processes important for galaxy formation and evolution in more detail, by considering how the abundances of different chemical elements in interstellar gas and stars evolves over time.
